Introduction
The National Student Survey (NSS) is an annual survey of final year undergraduates probing their experiences of studying at their university. The survey runs across all publicly funded Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and participating HEIs in Scotland. Since 2008, Further Education Colleges (FECs) with directly funded higher education students in England have been eligible to participate.
Following the 2010 NSS the Higher Education Academy (HEA) have conducted comparative analyses of the results for Social Policy, Social Work and a ‘SWAP Combined’ category in relation to four other social science disciplines (Economics, Politics, Sociology and Anthropology). SWAP and the Social Policy Association Executive would like to thank the HEA for carrying out these analyses and make it available for your information and own interpretation.
The main findings are presented in three sections in the analysis:
- Demographic profile of students
- Analysis of the 22 NSS questions by discipline and region of institution
- Analysis of the 22 NSS questions within discipline by region of institution
We would be very interested any comments you may have on these analyses or on the NSS data generally. Please tell us in what capacity they may be useful to you as well as any uses you or your university is putting the NSS data to. Alternatively please tell us why the data is not useful to you. The data can be accessed via NSS analysis_1010 as a word download.
